A look at every Mariah Carey album that debuted at #1

Superstar singer-songwriter Mariah Carey has so far released 14 studio albums in the span of 28 years. Of those, four has debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.

Those albums are Daydream (1995), Butterfly (1997), The Emancipation of Mimi (2005), and E=MC² (2008). Two other Mariah albums reached number one, but didn’t debut at the top spot: Mariah Carey (1990), #80 debut; and Music Box (1993), #2 debut.

Next month (on November 16), Carey is set to release her 15th studio album, “Caution,” which are preceded by three songs she has recently previewed: "GTFO," "The Distance," and the amazing lead single called "With you."

As the lambily awaits the new album from the Skinny Legend, let’s take a look at the aforementioned top-debuting Mariah albums:

  1. Daydream
Daydream debuted at the #1 spot with 224,000 copies sold in October 1995, staying at the top spot for three consecutive weeks. During the holiday season, the album regained momentum and reached the peak position again for an additional two weeks. At one point, the album sold an astounding 760,000 copies for a single week.

Daydream became the second bestselling album of 1996, and the 18th bestselling album on the '90s. The album remains as Carey’s bestselling album in the US, certified diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), denoting shipments of 10 million copies.

With more than 20 million copies sold worldwide, Daydream is one of the bestselling albums of all time. The album, of course, spawned three Billboard Hot 100 #1 singles: “Fantasy” and “One Sweet Day,” which both also debuted at the top, as well as “Always be my baby.”

Tracks from Daydream have been streamed more than 225 million times collectively on Spotify as of October 2018.

2. Butterfly
Butterfly debuted at #1 in September 1997, with 236,000 copies sold. While it only stayed at the pole position for a single week, it managed to stay in the Top 20 for more than 5 months (21 weeks). It charted in the Billboard 200 albums chart for more than one year (55 weeks in total).

With two #1 singles,“Honey” and “My all,” Butterfly has so far sold 3,807,000 copies, according to Nielsan SoundScan. In the US, it is certified 5x Platinum, which denoted shipments of five million copies.

Tracks from Butterfly have been streamed a combined 75 million times as of press time.

3. The Emancipation of Mimi

Carey started the comeback of the century with the #1 debut of The Emancipation of Mimi, which became the diva’s highest-selling album in the US since Daydream. With 404,000 copies sold in its first week in April 2005, it became the highest first-week sales of Carey’s illustrious career at that time.

The album remained in the Top 20 for almost 8 months (31 consecutive weeks). It later bounced back to #4 after the release of the Ultra Platinum Edition, helping the album sell another 185,000 copies that week.

The Emancipation of Mimi was the bestselling album in the US in 2005, with nearly 5 million copies sold. It was the first album by a solo female artist to become the year’s bestselling album since Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill in 1996.

Ten months after its release, the album was certified 6x Platinum by RIAA, surpassing the 6 million sales mark. As of today, The Emancipation of Mimi has racked up sales in excess of 12 million copies worldwide.

Two #1 songs hail from The Emancipation of Mimi—the record-shaterring “We belong together” and “Don’t forget about us.” Tracks from the album have been streamed more than 230 million times on Spotify.

4. E=MC²

E=MC² debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 in April 2008 with 463,000 copies sold, making it the biggest opening sales week of Carey’s career. It spent two weeks at the top spot.

The album was certified Platinum by RIAA, denoting shipments of one million units. It has so far sold 1,289,000 copies in the US as of April 2013, according to Nielsan SoundScan. E=MC² spent almost 7 months (27 weeks) in the Billboard 200, and finished as the 22nd biggest selling album of 2008 in America.

As of September 2009, the album has sold 2.5 million copies worldwide. Anchored by the #1 hit, “Touch my body,” tracks from E=MC² have been streamed more than 80 million times on Spotify.
