Mariah's classic Christmas song hits Billboard Hot 100 top 10 for the first time
Mariah Carey's "All I want for Christmas is you" dashes into the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 for the first time ever.
It's hard to believe, but before this year, this inescapable holiday ditty has only peaked at #11 (two Christmases ago). This week, the song finally cracks the top 10, reaching a milestone position at #9.
Over the years, it has kept growing in popularity, leading many to refer to Mariah as the undisputed Queen of Christmas. While Mariah have had many Top 10 hits under her belt, "Christmas" reaching the upper tier is notable for many reasons.
For one, this classic tune (written and produced by Mariah with Walter Afanasieff) was first released in 1994 (23 years ago!). This is the longest journey of any song to the top 10, from the time it was released.
"Christmas" is also the first holiday song to jump to the upper region of the Billboard Hot 100 this century. Only a few Yuletide tracks have come close to the top 10 in recent years, most notably Justin Bieber's "Mistletoe", which peaked at #11 in 2011.
Mariah's own "Oh Santa!" managed to peak at #100 back in 2010 (let's hope for a new high mark for that one in the future, too), while the "SuperFestive" version of "Christmas" (a collaboration between Mariah and Justin) peaked at #86 in 2011.
"Christmas" is Mariah's first Top 10 hit since "Obsessed" hit #7 in 2009, and is her highest charting single on the Hot 100 since "#Beautiful" in 2013 (which peaked at #15). Mariah now has 28 top 10 hits (18 of which has reached #1, the most for any solo artist).
With another week in the Hot 100, "Christmas" tallies a 22nd week in Billboard's main singles chart. Every year, the song re-apears on the chart for at least five weeks. If this trend continues, "Christmas" will be among the songs with the most numbers of weeks spent on the Hot 100 in about eight years time.
How high do you think "Christmas" will go this year?
