TNF100 expects 1,200 runners for challenging Baguio route

TWIST Editor Note: After the senseless tragedy that happened during the Boston Marathon last week, I could imagine runners for the TNF 100 dedicating their run for those who lost their limbs and lives. I would have.

While I was invited to join the run (which happens April 20 and 21 in Baguio), I had to decline due to conflict in schedule. Maybe next year.

Of course, the annual TNF100 is a trail run, as opposed to the Boston Marathon that happens on the road. Also, whatever disaster happened abroad shouldn't overshadow whatever good that would come out of this physically and mentally challenging activity.

Below is an article that I wrote for the Philippine Daily Inquirer before the terror attack in Boston happened.

If there is one brand name that has become synonymous with providing the highest quality of gears and materials for individuals living an outdoorsy and more active lifestyle, there’s no question that it’s The North Face.

As more individuals discover the wonders of going outdoors—whether it’s trail running or climbing a mountain—The North Face (TNF) keeps on delivering products born out of innovation and creativity to make sure their items are the best in their respective product categories.

“We use a lot of proprietary technology in our products, whether it’s a bag or a pair of running shoes. Everyone can be an explorer in his own rights. These individuals can most definitely rely on our products to help them in their quest to live a more active lifestyle,” Jundel Llagas, the brand’s division manager, told the Inquirer.

The past year was a good one for TNF but 2013 is shaping up to be an even more exciting year for the brand.

Last March, TNF opened its biggest free-standing store in Metro Manila. With 130 sqm of floor area, the relocated store in Shangri-la Plaza (from the ground floor to the 5th floor of the new extension mall) will allow the brand to showcase and carry more items.

“That flagship store will be a showcase for the latest TNF products, as well as other related items such as GoPro cameras and Garmin sportswatches that further enhances the outdoor experience,” Llagas said.

A 12th free-standing store is to open soon in SM Ora at the Bonifacio Global City sometime soon. TNF products, of course, are also available in Travel Club, Bratpack, and R.O.X. shops, aiding in the brand’s visibility and accessibility.

One of the newest items from TNF this year is the their trail running shoes with the Cradle Guide, a technology that cushions maximal forces at impact, dynamically supporting the arch through pronation and biomechanically guide the foot through toe-off for a more efficient stride on road or trail.

It has a firmer-density EVA on medial side that keeps foot centered on footbed and provides a stable platform through toe off for an efficient transition into the next stride.

“I can say we truly have the best trail running shoes. Our technology helps individuals have more stability and support for uneven terrain. Our shoes are developed for endurance,” Llagas said.

TNF also introduces FlashDry, a garment for outdoor activities that has 8x more wicking power than VaporWick. FlashDry’s proprietary fabrics incorporate microporous particles that accelerate the removal of moisture from the skin and speeds evaporative drying.  FlashDry enables the user to stay dry, feel less clammy and more comfortable over a wider range of temperatures and conditions.

The TNF 100 is an ultra marathon where runners can join the 100-, or 50-kilometer run. There are also 22- and 11-kilometer categories. Now on its 6th year, the TNF 100 will be held in Baguio this April 20 and 21.

“We are expecting 1,500 participants, up from last year’s 1,200. We at North Face are proud to say that we have been instrumental in promoting this category. When we started out six years ago in Nasugbu, Batangas, we only have 75 participants in the ultra category,” Llagas said.

People are taking running more seriously now, as evidenced by the weekly marathons around the country. Eventually, Llagas said, those road runners will try their hands—or rather legs—on trail running and may even like it more.

Llagas said: “It’s going to be another big year for The North Face. The brand is growing strongly and steadily. We have begun to tap the aspirational market, going beyond our primary target. Our loyal customers are more responsive as ever. There’s a lot in store for everyone."
