Sports that will be played in this year's Palarong Pambansa

This year's Palarong Pambansa, which happens in Dumaguete City, starts today (and ends on the 27th). As always, the annual national sports fest for the youth features a healthy mix of physically and mentally challenging sports.

Here's a list of sports that the 10,000-strong participants would be vying for: Archery, Arnis, Athletics, Badminton, Baseball, Basketball, Boxing, Chess, Football, Gymnastics, Sipa and Sepak Takraw, Softball, Swimming, Table Tennis, Lawn Tennis, and Volleyball.

There are also three new sports that will be played for the first time: wushu, billiards, and futsal.

These sports were added together with the regular ones to promote them as sports where Filipinos can excel abroad.

Aside from the aforementioned sports, there are other exciting activities such as athlete's youth seminars and a parade.

Composed of elementary and secondary school students from public and private schools, this year's Palarong Pambansa would be "clean, green and high-tech."

"More than the equipment we set up to showcase a high-tech Palaro, the sporting event will display Filipino core values such as honesty and fair play and will put equal emphasis on environmental concern," said education secretary Br. Armin A. Luistro.

The Palarong Pambansa is DepEd's way of promoting physical education and sports as an integral part of the Basic Education Curriculum and as an affirmation to its commitment to develop the  potentials of the youth to become responsible and globally competitive citizens.

Among this year's eco-friendly highlights include the planting of 10 to 15 indigenous tree by each delegation in the school compound where they will stay. The local unit of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources will provide the seedlings.

"Every staging of the Palaro should be an occasion to bring out the spirit of cooperation, discipline and a deep sense of responsibility to oneself and to the environment," said Luistro.

The participants were also directed to bring and use their own washable plates and kitchen utensils instead of using styrofoam and other plastic materials. Proper waste segregation collection and disposal will be implemented and strict compliance to non-burning of garbage will be observed. A room or bus beadle will also be assigned to clean the surroundings, toilets, classrooms and bus used by the delegation at the end of each Palaro day.
