TWIST's 10 Fave Local Films of 2011

It was a rather good year for the local movie industry, with record-breaking grosses and continued commercial success for several indie films. This year alone, I saw 13 local movies in the theater, the most I've seen in a calendar year.

In fact, this is the first year (and hopefully not the last) that I was able to make a separate list of top 10 fave films for locally produced material. In the past, I would just make an all-inclusive favorite films of 2011. [Shameless Plug: I'll have another blog entry up later, in which I name my 10 fave foreign movies of 2011.]

I've also developed a new fondness for two actresses--Eugene Domingo and Lovi Poe. I've been a fan of Uge since I saw her in "Kimmy Dora" in 2010. As for Lovi, I've become a fan since I saw her in "Temptation Island" earlier this year. Since then, I have followed their movie releases religiously.

Here's to a more fruitful year for the Philippine movie industry in 2012! But before that, here are my fave local films for 2011. Enjoy! :)

10. My House Husband
The only entry that I saw (so far) in the 2011 Metro Manila Film Festival, I knew I was going to like it before I even went inside the cinema. I was right. Judy Ann Santos, as always, was a stunning performer; Ryan Agoncillo improved his craft a lot; Eugene Domingo was, no doubt, the stand out of the film, delivering the film's funniest moments.

Fave moment: When Eugene tried to kill herself but changed her mind suddenly

9. Zombadings: Patayin sa shokot si Remington
I like this movie, I really do. After all, we don't get to see Roderick Paulete in the big screen too often these days. But it's one of those films which I felt could have been more. Maybe then I could have loved this film. But as it is, we love it.

Fave moment: When Roderick's character exclaimed a curse word; the gay scene in the stairs was pretty funny, too

8. Bulong
Lots of laugh-out-loud moments in the film, thanks to Angelica Panganiban, who has really gotten her comedic stride in check. The movie's concept is its greatest asset. In fact, they could have developed this into a strictly terrifying horror film. The industry could use more Angelica-starrer movies.

Fave moment: When Vhong exclaimed "May buhay, may buhay!"

7. Praybeyt Benjamin
With a tired story line and an ensemble of has-been cast members (except, of course, for Vice Ganda and Derek Ramsay), it came as a surprise that Praybeyt Benjamin became the biggest local film of all time (based on gross earnings). Don't get me wrong, it has its moments. But I've seen a lot of much funnier movies.

Fave moment: The dream scene where Vice and Derek's characters were acting like lovers in the field

6. The Road
As a fan of horror films, I was excited when I learned about this supposed "scariest film" of the year (Dear, we've heard that marketing line 20 million times). While this isn't the scariest movie by any measure, it really had its frightfully entertaining moments. Again, as a horror flick fanatic, it passed my discerning taste.

Fave moment: The reveal at the end of the movie (I so did not expect that!)

5. Aswang
Lovi Poe was a perfect fit for this remake, which starred Alma Moreno in the original outing. Here, Lovi is sexy, mysterious, sometimes even scary (well, she's an abuwak after all, right?). Together with a very likeable cast and a solid storyline, it leaves me craving for a Part 2.

Fave moment: Everytime Lovi runs--she's sexy as hell (I think I've made that pretty clear in this blog entry! lol)

4. Temptation Island
Before I saw this remake, I first had to see the original. Thank God I found a copy! I loved the '80s film and since they've retained 90% of the script and storyline here, I fell in love with this one, too. I missed Rufa Mae in the big screen; Solen was sexy as always; Heart & Marian were okay; and Lovi Poe was as hot as the dessert they were stranded in.

Fave moment: "Walang tubig, walang pagkain, eh 'di magsayaw na lang tayo!" and other festive lines!!

3. My Neighbor’s Wife
The goodlooking actors in this film is enough reason to watch the movie. But these actors could actually act--most of the time. The storyline is intriguing and exciting; something different. All the swapping of lovers would make you wonder if it's Jake Cuenca and Dennis Trillo's turn next.

Fave moment: When Lovi's character said: "Inaamin ko, hindi ako magaling magluto; pero, sh*t, magaling ako sa kama!" Classic!

2. No Other Woman
I was in the US when this film was shown in theaters, yet it didn't stop me from watching it. We watched there in Las Vegas to a packed house. The trailer of the film shows a lot of the characters uttering witty dialogues but they had more in store in the full length material. I give the film a 9 out of 10 stars!

Fave moment: When the characters of Christine Reyes, Derek Ramsay, and Anne Curtis were having dinner at their home

1. Ang Babae sa Septic Tank
Only the inimitable Eugene Domingo could have made this film a hit! This is the kind of comedy that the country needs--something that's intelligent and witty (we've had enough of the slapstick kind). I am praying they make a sequel for this film. A great victory for indie films and the local movie industry in general.

Fave moment: When Eugene's character was demonstrating the three kinds of acting, among many others!
