The beautiful chaos at the Mobile World Congress
The Mobile World Congress is, without doubt, the biggest convention (of any sort--gadgety or otherwise) I've ever attended. There were hundreds of exhibitors, all vying for the attention of the thousands of visitors gathered there earlier today.
For someone who was attending an event of this scale for the first time, it could get overwhelming. The chatter of the crowd, the loud music, and the many things happening all at once could get chaotic. Luckily, the reporter in me was alive and kicking and I was able to absorb the more important details without suffering from info overload.
Our day started off early, greeted by a light traffic caused by the throngs of people all heading for the Fira Gran Via, where the event is taking place. According to the people I've talked to, who are part of the MWC organizing team, they are expecting some 72,000 people attendees for the duration of the congress.
Once we got to the venue, we had a couple of minutes to look around before we were ushered into the Lenovo booth media room where we got to talk to Lenovo execs about the company's past successes, present positive trajectory, and the promising future of the brand. I shall write about these in a more comprehensive manner sometime later this week.
If there's one thing I realized while I was walking around the exhibition was that the world of mobile goes beyond the smartphones and tablets that are so popular today. I spotted several wearable devices from Sony, Huawei, and the likes. There are technologies that bring those technologies to the automobile industry, too.
Despite the thick crowd, I felt safe. There were enough security personnel around to keep everyone in check--not that there were anyone rowdy. The event was highly organized. There were "networking gardens," designed to provide a venue for, well, networking.
For Lenovo, it was the DOit apps, the new lines of S-Series phones, and the 10.1 inch Yoga tablet that made headlines. But of course, there was also the unveiling of the Samsung Galaxy S5, Nokia's foray into the Android world, and Mark Zuckerberg's keynote address.
We capped off the night with a wonderful dinner at the Spanish Village, where we were treated to a captivating performance of pure Flamengo. I couldn't even begin to describe how impressed I was with the performers, dancers and singers alike. They were superb. Clap. Clap. Clap! :)
I do post live updates on my Twitter (@hot_ken) and Instagram (@kennethdelrosario) accounts, so please feel free to check me out there. That's it for me tonight. Hasta Manana! :)
