Palarong Pambansa top performers get more than bragging rights
Top performing athletes in this year's Palarong Pambansa will be receiving more than bragging rights. For the first time ever, deserving performers will be receiving cash incentives that is sure to further motivate them to do better next time.
Not that the 10,000 athletes and delegates are after the money--after all they will still get the trophies and medals--but no one can argue getting some cash for hard work is a bad thing. If anything, the athletes can at least get some pasalubong for their proud parents waiting back home.
This year's Palarong Pambansa will be held in Dumagueta City. It's a yearly sporting event that aims to "inculcate the spirit of discipline, teamwork, excellence, fair play, solidarity, and sportsmanship" as well as to widen the scope of talent identification.
For the monetary incentives, the athletes have the private sector to thank for, as companies offered scholarships as well.
"This is another facet of public- private partnership wherein we don't just build classrooms for them, we also help build their character thru sports development," said Education Secretary Br. Armin Luistro, thanking the private sector for its ever growing involvement in the holistic molding of the youth.
Donors from the private sector include Nestle–Milo, Smart, Ever Bilena Cosmetics, Philippine Airlines, Aboitiz Foundation, Ang-Hortaleza Foundation, Johnson & Johnson Philippines, San Miguel Foundation and Ayala Foundation.
To date, DepEd has received pledges in cash and in kind from the private sector totaling over P2 million. There are also offers of scholarship for athletes who will stand out in selected games.
The 2013 Palarong Pambansa will be held at the Governor Mariano Perdices Sports Complex from April 21 to 27. Some 10,000 elementary and secondary school students from public and private schools nationwide are expected to participate.
Luistro could not have put it much better: "Reward comes to those who work for it."
