Scalp problem? There's a clinic for that

When was the last time you paid serious attention to your scalp? If you're like me, chances are it's been a long, long time, if at all. That's why when I received an invitation to interview the owner of Vigen Scalp Clinic, Judy Ho, I accepted right away.

From then on, it was Scalp 101 for me. If Judy could have her way, she would have wanted individuals to have their scalps checked on a regular basis, just as they would visit their dentists to make sure their teeth and gums are in top condition.

“Scalp care treatment hasn’t really gotten the attention it should get in the Philippines. A lot of people think that normal use of shampoo and conditioner are enough. But there’s more to scalp care than those,” Judy said.

Apparently, Vigen Scalp Clinic is the first establishment in the country to offer holistic, science-based approach to treating scalp concerns such as hair loss, inflamed scalp, sensitive scalp, dandruff, and oily scalp. With products and technology from Germany, Judy said it’s about time that Filipinos get to have the most effective scalp treatment in town.

In the scalp clinic, staffers used a diagnostic machine with high-resolution cameras that magnified the image of my scalp thousands times over. They also checked my hair's density and count; pore openings; and dandruff flakes, among others.

It is important for the scalp problem to be diagnosed properly so it can be treated accordingly, as opposed to people just buying products without ever consulting professionals. Once the scalp problem is identified, skilled crew would recommend a treatment.

“Since opening in early January of this year, 99.9 percent of our clients would have one scalp problem or another. Up to 80 percent of our clients would discover that they have an inflamed scalp. Many of our clients 30 years old and above are also seeking help for hair loss,” Judy said.

Most of these scalp concerns, she said, is caused by over-usage of shampoo and conditioners that leave chemical trails, as well as excessive hair coloring, and use of gel, hairspray, or leave-on conditioners.

According to Judy, it took her three years of research and study before she was confident enough to put up the scalp clinic (though she has been operating the Vigen Bodycare since 2006).

“I personally tried hundreds of products and researched about scalp treatments around the world so I have extensive knowledge of what works and what doesn’t,” she said.

Ho said that the best time to have their scalps checked is today, as one can never be too sure about the health of their respective scalps. Those who know they have scalp problems can, at least, start treatment as soon as possible. Those who do have healthy scalps can prevent any untoward damage that abuse and age can bring.

“The concept of going to a scalp clinic is still new to the Filipinos. But we’ve been having lots of walk-in clientss who are curious about the services and products that we offer. This is good news because a lot of people don’t realize that lots of hair problems are actually caused by an unhealthy scalp,” she said.

With the branch at Greenhills doing very well, Judy is set to open a second branch in Ortigas this March.

Judy said: “Having a healthy scalp doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with your hair anymore. We never recommend that people stop getting perm or hair color, but we do advice our clients to come to the clinic right after so we can help reduce or eliminate any untoward damage.”
