Top 10 "Best Old Movies" for 2012
You know how sometimes you just don't want to see in theaters a new film that everyone's talking about? Or perhaps you just didn't have the time to see one when it first came out? Or maybe some foreign movies happened to become accessible to you for the first time?
This list is dedicated for all the films that were commercially released in 2011 (or earlier)--whether they be local or foreign ones. And yes, this is the first time that TWIST got the chance to view each of this amazing films. Long overdue!
It's also the first time that TWIST is counting down what we think are the best "old" movies. This gives us a chance to pay tribute and homage to films that have entertained us all though out the year, along with newer releases. We'll have a separate list for our favorite movies that were released in the past 12 months, which shall be posted soon.
Having these older releases accessible digitally has made catching up on the "classics" so much easier and we have to thank technology for that. As always, the list was compiled based on TWIST's own criteria and preference. We chose the ones that moved us, those that made us think, those that made us feel something.
In several cases when I saw all three films of a trilogy, such as our #2 film "The Matrix" (1999) and #6 film "Lord of the Rings" (2001), I decided to consider the best among them and drop the other two.
Here are TWIST's choices:
10. Bridesmaids (2011)
The movie was full of lovable characters, witty dialogue, twisted storyline, and original jokes. While we weren't very familiar with most of the actresses that starred in it, they definitely had chemistry that worked to the film's advantage. It did well on the box office and now we know why. Our favorite character was Megan, the stocky woman, who were responsible for my favorite scenes in the movie (especially the ones involving the secret agent in the plane). Hilarious! Part 2, please! :) Watch the trailer here!
9. Casino Royale (2006)
A lot of people couldn't believe it when we tell them we haven't seen a single James Bond movie. It's not that we don't like Bond, the character, it's just that we feel we're too far behind the franchise to catch up. But we wanted to watch "Skyfall" so bad that we felt obliged to watch the prior two films (in which Daniel Craig plays the iconic role) to totally understand the story. We made the right decision. After seeing this film, we proceeded to watching "Quantum of Solace" (2008) which was also great, may we add. Watch the trailer here!
8. 2 Days in Paris (2007)
Thank God for film festivals that malls in the country have been running left and right this past year. During this year's CineEuropa in Shangri-la Plaza, we saw the French film "2 Days in Paris." That movie made us laugh so hard, thanks to its memorable, awkward, and funny characters. Of course, the gorgeous backdrop that was Paris didn't hurt one bit. Watch the trailer here!
7. The Coffin (2008)
We have to give kudos to SM Megamall for exclusively showing this film as part of their Film Fiesta (where they show older movies or indie films for only P27). We love how this Thai film has a unique premise mixed with lots of tradition, plot twists, and memorable characters to do the job. It reminds us of such Filipino films like "Feng Shui" or "Sukob," which are two of the country's more solid horror films in the last 10 years. Watch the trailer here!
6. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Our main motivation in watching the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy is so we could finally get into the world of Middle Earth before "The Hobbit" comes out. And after more than a decade after the film first came out in 2011, we keep asking ourselves why we didn't bother with the film before. We applaud how the movie was written, with remarkable dialogue, amazing set and costume design, and very engaging storytelling. Watch the trailer here!
5. Maria Larssons Everlasting Moments (2008)
This period drama is the best film we saw on the CineEuropa Film Festival held earlier this year at Shangri-la Plaza. We remember this film making us laugh, cry, angry (at the villain), think, and feel inspired with the lovable characters' stories. There's so many good things about this movie--it touches a lot on photography, women empowerment, motherhood, and love. This kinds of film are the reason why we make time for those film festivals. 4. The Bourne Identity (2002)
When the news broke that Jeremy Renner and Rachel Weisz were in the Philippines shooting for the fourth installment of the franchise, we knew we had to catch up on our Bourne movies. After watching the first three films in the franchise, we couldn't be happier we did. The films were action-packed, taking the exciting scenes around the world--not unlike how James Bond does it. We are so looking forward to seeing Jeremy (why? cause he's so hot!) reprise his role as Aaron Cross. And if those two lead characters one day meet in one film, it should be titled The Bourne Ecstacy or Heaven or Bliss. Watch the trailer here!
3. The Dark Knight (2008)
We tried resisting the urge of watching Batman films as we first thought they were just a bunch of pointless superhero films. But then we found out that Anne Hathaway would be in this year's The Dark Knight Rises so we finally gave in and caught up on our Batman movies. While it took a while for us to get over the fact that it was Christian Bale in the lead and not Tom Cruise, we fully got on board 10 minutes into the film. The Joker may just be one of our favorite villains of all time! Watch the trailer here!
2. The Matrix (1999)
This iconic film is definitely one of the best movies of all time, in our humble opinion. The concept is scary-sick, the special effects impressive (especially in 1999), the story line solid, and the actors doing their job very well. But while we looooove the first film in the trilogy, we thought "The Matrix Reloaded" and "The Matrix Revolutions" didn't do the franchise any justice. Oh, and yes, we wish Keanu Reeves gets back to making hit films. Watch the trailer here!
1. Himala (1982)
Three decades after this film's initial release, we finally got to see it. Props must be given to people responsible for restoring this classic Filipino film that has won its star, Nora Aunor, and director dozens of accolades around the world--and rightly so. The film's plot is simple, yet engaging, intriguing, controversial, perhaps maybe even strange for people who are not very well versed with the Filipino culture. But as a film lover, I do believe that this is one of the best Filipino films ever made. I wish the Metro Manila Film Festival (which starts its run today in the whole country) goes back to producing such iconic films such as this. Watch the trailer here!
