A first in the country--cashless payment for cab fares

Ever got into a taxi only to realize you don’t have enough cash to pay for your fare so you were forced to go down and look for an ATM? You’ve just lost precious minutes.

If this scenario ever played out in Davao City and you happened to get a Mabuhay Taxi, there would have been no need to inconvenience yourself. That’s because you can actually pay your cab fare using your ATM and other debit cards.

With the installation of debit card terminals in its fleet of cars—a first in the country, Mabuhay Taxi has upped the level of comfort and convenience for its thousands of passengers.

“This system has put us on par, if not higher, among more advanced taxicabs around the world.  Passengers now have a safer, faster way of paying without the need to bring cash,” said Pierre Ryan Tan, the company’s assistant manager.

Mabuhay Taxi is a 24-hour metered taxi service which has been serving its customers in Davao for over 18 years. There’s no doubt that it is the city’s, if not the country’s, most modern taxi fleet, equipped with ATM/debit card terminals, GPS automated taxi dispatching system in select units, two-way radios, 24-hour call center service, and full maintenance facility.

“Passing by the bank or ATM has become a thing of the past since our passengers can now pay using their ATM or debit cards with no service fees or minimum fare. It’s one cashless payment our customers truly find efficient,” said Tan.

For this project, Mabuhay Taxi partnered with Chinabank, one of the most solid members of BancNet in the country. Eventually, the whole fleet of over 200 cabs will be equipped with the BancNet terminals.

The BancNet swipers were installed some two weeks ago (July 6), in twenty black taxi cabs initially, and already it has caught the attention of many, not just those who live in Davao but also those who frequently visit the famed city.

“A few hours after we installed the BancNet terminals in our taxicabs, news about it went viral over social media sites. On the evening of the same day, our company was already featured in various national TV channels, radio stations, and newspapers.  It was an instant fifteen minutes of fame,” Tan said.

Mabuhay Taxi and its sister company Blue Taxi exclusively serve Marco Polo Hotel, Grand Regal Hotel & Casino, and main and grocery entrances of SM City Davao.
