Punishing trail to prodigious Pinatubo

If you have to ride a 4x4 for an hour in an extremely rough road and trek a punishing trail for two more hours to get to your destination, then it better be worth the trip, right?

Fortunately, we weren't disappointed when my friends and I did just that to see the famous crater lake of Mt Pinatubo via Capas, Tarlac, the other day.

The all-day trip required us to leave Quezon City at 4am. We got to Capas around 7am and began our 3-hour punishing trek (I keep using the word "punishing" because it really does encapsulate the challenging trip we had to endure to get to the crater lake).

The trek was made gruelling by the bumpy and course path that the 4x4 had to go through for an hour, not to mention the mini-rivers it had to pass through. The walking-hiking-trekking part wasn't any more forgiving. I could think of more adjectives to describe the hardship (for lack of better--or worse--term), we went through, but suffice it to say, it was not an easy trek.

But lo and behold, when we finally got to the crater (at around 12 noon), it was a magical moment. We took pictures, we went swimming, we rested our tired feet, we had a snack, we played around. It was fantastical!

We stayed at the crater for about an hour before we had to start the trek back before it got dark. I wouldn't even go to the yet-more suffering we had to go through on the way back. Instead, I'll let you enjoy these photos that I took with my iPod Touch!

Definitely an adventure I'd recommend, especially for adventure-seekers and nature lovers like myself. But please make sure you had enough sleep the night before or else you'd be, yes, punishing yourself. Enjoy the photos! :)

You see this sign after an hour of 4x4 ride and about an hour and 45 minutes of walking-trekking-hiking
