'Next Fall' is not a gay play, director says

The cast of "Next Fall"
While the story of Repertory Philippines' latest offering, "Next Fall," revolves around a gay couple and their trials and triumphs together, its director reiterates that it is "not a gay film."

Instead, it is a "story about love and how love transcends differences," according to Audie Gemora, the play's director.

I got the chance to attend the media preview of the play, which runs in Greenbelt On Stage until February 5, and I must admit that the characters moved me to tears. Yes, it's that good.

Here's the synopsis: The play takes place in early 2000's in New York. The show opens in a hospital where Luke is being treated after he was hit by a runaway cab. Here, the audience gets to know Adam, Luke's boyfriend of 4 years, and Holly, Luke's friend.

Because Luke's parents have no idea about his relationship with Adam, tensions begin when Adam shows more concern towards Luke's wellbeing, uncharacteristic of just a casual friend. The story is interspersed with how Luke and Adam, fell in love, and constructed a life together.

"Next Fall" is Rep's first offering for 2012, its 45th season. Written by playright Geoffrey Nauffts, "Next Fall" is an exploration of faith in a modern gay relationship; a witty and provocative take on commitment, unconditional love, and what goes beyond a typical love story.

The cast includes Bart Guinguno (Adam) and David Bianco (Luke); along with Liesl Batucan (Holly); Niccolo Manahan (Brandon, Luke's friend); Juno Henares (Luke's mother); and Miguel Faustman (Luke's father).

Tickets are sold for P400. But there's a deal at cashcashpinoy.com, which offers tickets for only P120. If you're going out to watch a movie, I suggest seeing this play instead. Make 2012 the year you get into performing arts. It's a worthy and enriching resolution, no doubt!
