April 30th was the day my girl Mariah got married to Nick Cannon |
There are several dates in a year that we never ever forget--there are loved ones' birthdays, special anniversaries, and whatnots. On a personal note, today April 30, means so much more to me than the other 364 days in the calendar.
Nothing superstitious about it. But I can't help but feel excited every year when the date comes up.
That being said, there are really just two important reasons why this date is of importance to me:

My mom and dad on vacation in the US |
1. My very first byline
Five years ago, on April 30, 2006, the very first article of mine that saw print appeared on the Philippine Daily Inquirer's Global Pinoy section. It was the first time I saw the "By Kenneth M. del Rosario" byline and I was ecstatic and nervous and shy and proud.
That very first article I wrote for the paper talks about me and my brother growing up while my dad was away most of the time because of his work. My dad's a seaman so he basically is out of the country for 11 months at one time (sometimes even more). It was a bit of a drama, actually. And I still smile whenever I re-read that piece. There's certainly bits and pieces I'd like to re-write if I have the chance.
I guess the date marked an era for me that has opened up wonderful opportunities beyond my comprehension then.

Mariah weds Nick in Bahamas on April 30, 2008 in a then-secret ceremony |
2. Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon's wedding date
Like I always say, those who know me would know I'm a huge Mariah fan and that I always will be ("until forever," as one of her songs go *smiles*). Three years ago on April 30, 2008, Mariah and Nick secretly wed at Bahamas.
I didn't believe the reports then until Mariah herself confirmed it. At first, I was mad. Like a real family member, I felt a sense of betrayal that she would get married without informing us, fans, first. But when I learned that not even her mom was at the secret wedding and when I saw the happiness in Mariah's eyes, I felt ashamed of myself. Now I celebrate with the happy couple as if it was my sister's.
I don't know how the couple would celebrate their wedding anniversary this year, given that the heavily pregnant Mariah is ready to pop her twins any minute, but I'm sure it's going to be festive. As always.
