TWIST's Top 10 favorite songs of 2013

There were no shortage of great songs in 2013, despite the increasing popularity of many "singers" whose job is to release "twerking songs" that have absolutely no musical value (with accompanying porn-ish music videos to boot).

Because I listen to a variety of songs, this list of my most favorite tracks of 2013 have pop, country, and R&B. But most importantly, this is the first time that a Filipino song has made it to my countdown since I started doing this four years ago. (But of course you'll have to read through everything to find out which one) *wink*

My first disclaimer for this list is that you won't find any Mariah Carey songs here only because I purposely excluded the songs she released this year ("#Beautiful" and "The Art of Letting Go"). I am a hardcore fan so her songs would naturally rank at the top. So to keep things fair for the other artists, we keep the Mariah songs for a countdown of their own. :)

In choosing the songs in this list, I followed a methodical and scientific approach only musical experts could undertake. And if you believed that last sentence, then I'd just punked you. The only criteria for the list, of course, is how yours truly like the song. Personal taste, dahhhling!

If you love my list, hurray! If you don't, let me know and I'll email you an extended version of my countdown. Maybe then we'll find more songs we mutually like. Ha! Without further ado, here you go. Enjoy! :)

10. "Say something" by A Great Big World feat. Christina Aguilera
It's no secret that I love power ballads that have big vocals. This song isn't one of them. On the contrary, it's a track that tugs on your emotions more on the strength of its melody and the harmony that the artists create. I must give props to Ms Aguilera's subtle approach in delivering her vocals here--it's a side of her we don't get to see very often but I hope we do.

9. "Counting stars" by One Republic
This song has been out for a while, but I never got to listen to it until very late last year. Little did I know that I was missing a lot. The song's lyrics are cleverly written, the melody catchy, and the lead vocalist nothing short of hot. So there.

8. "Lose to win" by Fantasia
It's a shame that Fantasia never had any other hit aside from her debut "I believe." Her vocals are still potent, her singing style one-of-a-kind. This song showcases her vocals really well, sounding like it was made for radio. Unfortunately, it never did get the mainstream attention it deserved.

7. "Little things" by One Direction
Here's a surprise entry--even for me. I never did pay attention to boy bands since, well, the Backstreet Boys and N'Sync days. Oh, was I into them! But here comes One Direction with their sweet and emotive song. At least they're showing the world they made their name not just on their looks. The lads can actually sing.

6. "Little bit of everything" by Keith Urban
Every time I hear this song, I picture longtime lovers strolling peacefully in a farm somewhere in the country. It's very relaxing--a country song with the right amount of pop in it, strewn together by Keith's youthful voice and effective guitar skills.

5. "Easy" by Sheryl Crow
The last solo outing of Sheryl that I could say I truly love was "My favorite mistake" back in the late '90s (save of course for her collabo with Kid Rock with "Picture" during the early '00s). So hearing her in this song was an eargasmic experience for me. The parent album "Feels like home" has some nice songs in it, too.

4. "Take back the night" by Justin Timberlake
None of the songs from "The 20/20 Experience" excited me enough. "Suit & tie" was boring as hell. But the second installment of the album series, the "part two," however, resulted in this song. This is JT at his best--sexy, cool, groovy. This is what the music world had missed for years.

3. "Same love" by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis feat Miranda Lambert
Wow. This song is just wow. One doesn't need to be gay to relate to this song. In fact, it might has just swayed me towards being in favor of gay marriage. The lyrics contain some of the more powerful things I've heard in song in years. The melody, too, sticks to your head long before you're done listening to the song.

2. "Just give me a reason" by Pink feat. Nate Ruess
If you've read my post about my most favorite male-female duets of all time, you'd know that I love this song to musical pieces. I never get tired of listening to it. Timeless. Classic.

1. "Dati" by Sam Concepcion & Tippy Dos Santos featuring Quest
I haven't fallen in love with a Filipino song in a very looooooong time! So when I heard this song--and couldn't stop listening to it--I knew I had fallen deeply in love. Sam and Tippy's voices blend well together and Quest's rap verses are topnotch. It helps that the song's lyrics contain lots of pop culture references from the '90s, the era of my childhood. So yes, I have only love for this track. I truly wish we could have more OPM songs of this caliber for years to come.

Runners up: "Crooked smile" by J. Cole feat TLC; "Feel this moment" by Pitbull feat Christina Aguilera; "Get lucky" by Daft Punk feat Pharrel; "Blurred lines" by Robin Thicke feat T.I. and Pharell; "Applause" Lady Gaga; "Hold on, we're going home" by Drake; "Wasting all these tears on you" by Cassadee Pope; and "Better dig two" by The Band Perry.
