Nobody said surfers need to look good while on the waves. But, hey, if you can be good and look good while you’re at it, might as well, right?
This is especially true for lady surfers, for which surfing
equipment aren’t always made for. Surfing equipment—rash guards and board
shorts for men are aplenty. Not so much for the ladies. Luckily for them
there’s Roxy, a brand that offers flattering surfing gears for women.
The brand recently brought to the country its global brand
ambassador Philippa Anderson, a 21-year-old Australian surfer, to promote the
brand. Having been introduced to surfing when she was just 9, Anderson has
practically been surfing all her life.
“I imagine it was harder for lady surfers 10 or 15 years ago
to get into surfing, let alone be successful in it. Surfing is still a
male-dominated sports but, at least, today, it’s now normal to see a girl
surfing,” Anderson told the Inquirer in a sit-down interview.
Anderson was ranked #1 in the Junior Women’s Category by the
Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) in 2012. As a Roxy ambassador, she
has shared her passion for surfing around the world, testing surf spots one
after another.
Last year, Anderson competed in the Roxy Siargao
International Surfing Cup where she placed 3rd.
“Siargao is a perfect surfing spot. The water is warm, the
sun is always out. The waves are just ideal for competitions,” she said.
To Anderson, Roxy isn’t just a surf brand, but a family that
looks after her, pushing her to achieve her dreams of one day becoming a
professional surfer.
“I
hope to one day reach my goals of being a World Title holder, and spreading the
word of God and helping the less fortunate,” Anderson.
While in the Philippines promoting the brand, Anderson is joined by Nilbie Blancada, Roxy’s Philippine athlete. Born and raised in Siargao, 21-year-old Blancada is proving to be one of the most promising female surfers in the Southeast Asia region.
Blancada started surfing when she was 15 years old,
introduced to the sports by her older siblings. Today, she is helping her other
younger sister get into it.
“I was actually afraid of the big waves. But my big sister,
Nildie, made me go to the beach with her every day until I fell in love with
the sports, too,” she said.
Like most surfers, Blancada would surf everyday—from 4:30 in
the morning before the sun rises, until sundown. Talk about getting to know the
waves.
Before bagging international titles, she’s been winning
numerous surfing competitions held all over the country like the ones in
Surigao del Sur, Baler Aurora, Leyte, and La Union.
Roxy items are found inside Quiksilver, Inc stores, the
world’s leading outdoor sports lifestyle company, which designs, produces and
distributes a diversified mix of branded apparel, winter sports equipment,
footwear, accessories and related products.
Together, Anderson and Blancada are proving that surfing may
not be for-the-boys anymore for long.
