When I compiled the list of my favorite female-female duets of all time, I thought the choices were limited. But, boy, was I in for a surprise. Compiling the list of my most favorite male-male duets was a lot tougher, thanks to a much slimmer number of available tracks to choose from.
As always, this list was based mainly on my personal taste. Songs I grew up listening to have an edge. I tried to rate the songs based on how well the song sounds as well as how the collaboration of the two artists excited me.
This list includes tracks by two distinct male artists. Songs by a male singer with a male rapper were not considered. To be included here, two male singers must have traded verses in the song. They should be singing (not rapping) together. [PS: I have nothing against rapping, except that they belong to another list.]
Only tracks recorded together, whether they were released or not, were considered; live performances were not. This is consistent with how I compiled my most favorite male-female duets of the past 20 years. Without further ado, here are my most favorite male-male duets. Enjoy! :)
10. Brad Paisley & Robbie Williams - "Collision of Worlds" (2011)
A kick-ass movie deserves a kick-ass soundtrack so "Cars 2" and this song was a good match. Also, it's nice to hear a duet that is not about love. :)
9. Stevie Wonder & Michael Jackson - "Get it" (1987)
I came across this song while I was compiling this list--and I'm glad I did. The song is catchy, something I'm sure I'd have danced to if I could back in the '80s. :)
8. Babyface & Stevie Wonder - "How come, how long" (1997)
With a duet from this two amazing singers, impressive vocals are to be expected. But I was equally happy that these artists tackled an important issue like abuse, as you can see in the song's music video.
7. Tony Bennett & Michael Buble - "Just in time" (2006)
Tony Bennett re-recorded this song (which was originally his own) with another charming singer, Michael Buble, for this album "Duets: An American Classic." In the song, we are graced by Tony's still competent vocals and Michael's soothing voice, accompanied by live instruments. This is music.
6. Robbie Williams & Gary Barlow - "Shame" (2010)
In a nutshell, this song is about friendship and regret. It was an event to see two of the members of boy band Take Five reunite for a meaningful track like this. Oh yes, in the video, I like how the two would stare at each other as if they were about to kiss any second. LOL
5. Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson - "Say, say, say" (1983)
This kind of team-up between two of the music industry's pop royalties is hard to come by. I wasn't even born yet when this song first came out, but listening to it, I can hear it could be a smash hit even today (with a couple of tweaks, of course). Plus points for a cute video. :)
4. Blake Shelton & Trace Adkins - "Hillbilly Bone" (2009)
It's a song about how there's country in all of us. I may not be the biggest country fan but I surely agree with this. It's a nice vehicle to see Blake's funny side. I'm not too familiar with Trace but he looks like a fun guy, too. And, yes, kudos to a fun video, too.
3. R. Kelly & Usher - "Same girl" (2007)
This is like the male counterpart of "The boy is mine" by Brandy and Monica. Well, the guys aren't really fighting over a girl in the song (like the females do in their song) but they are talking about dating the same woman. Yikes!
2. Conor Maynard & Ne-yo - "Turn around" (2012)
I love Conor's debut album, "Animal," from which this song was taken from. The addition of Ne-yo in the commercial edit and video added more street cred for the young singer. While the pairing isn't exactly earth-shaking or revolutionary, I think there's a nice chemistry there, enough to make the song shine.
1. Chris Brown & Justin Bieber - "Next to you" (2011)
Look past these two singers' egos and unflattering personal lives (or so what we see in the press) and you'll find that they can actually sing. I remember listening to this song over and over again when it was first released in 2011. Obviously, the duet isn't Paul-MJ proportions, but that doesn't matter. In my humble opinion, the song has enough cool factor, catchy beat, and good-looking singers with good-enough voices. I'm not the biggest Chris Brown or Justin Bieber fan, but you've got to give them credit for delivering this nice track.
