TWIST's Top 10 favorite songs of 2012

The other day, I listed down my 10 most favorite albums of 2012. This time, I'm counting down the 10 songs of the past 12 months that had my music players screaming "enough repeats, please" to no avail.

Compiling this list, I decided to exclude album tracks. Otherwise, this list would have been markedly different. This list features songs that had their commercial release in 2012. So the song's parent album could have been released, say, in 2011 yet see a song from that material in this list (provided that the latter got a commercial release in 2012).

In 2011, "S&M (Remix)" by Rihanna featuring Britney Spears topped my list. The year before that, it was California Swag District's "Teach me how to dougie."

At the risk of stating the obvious, may I reiterate that this list was compiled based on my personal tastes and nothing else. If you have your own set of favorite songs, please feel free to sound off in the comments section below. Without further ado, here are my 10 most favorite songs of 2012:

10. "Some nights" by fun.
I love how dynamic this song is--the vocals are strong, the melody is engaging. The words really touched something in me especially the line "what do I stand for?". The part where the song artistically describes how a baby is the best thing that could come out of a sexual abuse also makes it more interesting and moving.

9. "Locked out of heaven" by Bruno Mars
Scrutinized side by side with Bruno's earlier hits such as "Just the way you are" and "Grenade," this one would look like a lightweight. But on its own, "Heaven" has its good departments. Of course there is Bruno's signature smooth vocals, but I also have to commend the song doing a great job of switching from fast to slow beat and fast again.

8. "I'm on a roll" by Stefano
This song features a crazy beat that has really got me dancing for weeks. Stefano, a semifinalist on "American Idol" Season 10, performed it live on the show (Season 11) to much of my excitement. Sadly, it never really achieved any commercial success. The album, on which it was supposed to be part of, never saw the light of day. *Sigh*

7. "Die young" by Ke$ha
I'm a fan of Ke$ha's "Blow," which made it to #2 in a similar list I made last year. That is why I was looking forward to her follow-up. While I don't love this song as much as I love "Blow" or "Your love is my drug," it's a nice-enough song that got my feet thumping and my car's stereo blaring for a while. Good job, Ke$ha, for being consistent.

6. "How we do" by Rita Ora
I'd consider this my party anthem of the year. It's cool, cute, and classy at the same time. While the song doesn't at all showcase Rita's full vocal potential, I had heard enough to look her up and discover that the girl can sing. Did I mention I love the crazy beats of the song?

5. "Give your heart a break" by Demi Lovato
This little pop-ditty's witty lyrics, infectious feel-good vibe, and Demi's strong vocals is what attracted me to this song--and made me fall in love with it for weeks on end. It never became a top 10 hit for Demi but its longevity in the charts (at least in the US) no doubt makes it one of her most successful hits. Am hoping for a new album and a new song from the X-Factor judge soon.

4. "Mercy" by Kanye West, Big Sean, Pusha T, 2 Chainz
I admit--I don't understand any of the words (if there are indeed words) being sung in the song's hook. But the foursome's amazing rapping talents really got me. And need we mention that song's siiiick beat? It's cool, it's dope, it's the thing you'd like to blast away in your car's stereo with your windows down.

3. "Free" by Haley Reinhart
I absolutely love everything about the song, but it's Haley's vocals that really stand out. Haley, who finished third during "American Idol" Season 10, performed this song live during the show the following season. Its classy, jazzy, bluesy sound definitely makes it a classic in my books.

2. "Can't say no" by Conor Maynard
This song was my jam for months. The track is sexy with a cool vibe; youthful and exciting. Of course it helped that Conor is cute to the tee. But more than that, it's the promise of better things to come from this British lad. After hearing this song, I just had to listen to Conor's album, "Contrast," which eventually became my favorite album of 2012.

1. "Dance again" by Jennifer Lopez featuring Pitbull
When I first heard this song, I liked it right away. But I didn't think I'd be listening to it over and over again because I like it so much. More than that, I get to enjoy it with friends who love the song as much as I do. Obviously, the song's selling point is its hook: "I wanna dance, and love, and dance again!" Oh, I take it back, the song's best ass-et (ehem!) is the music video with the super hot Jennifer Lopez. [PS: "On the floor" was #7 on a similar list I did in 2011. Consistency! :) ]

Runners up: "Pound the alarm" by Nicki Minaj; "One more night" by Maroon 5; "Just a fool" by Christina Aguilera and Blake Shelton; "Clique" by Kanye West, Jay-Z, and Big Sean. Other album tracks that I really loved include "Okay, here's the truth" by Javier Colon; "Beez in the trap" by Nicki Minaj; "I fucked up" by Madonna; and "Picture" by Conor Maynard.
