An original Filipino musical 'Rivalry'
Who would have thought that the rivalry--perceived or otherwise--between two of the country's most famous university basketball teams would someday find its way outside the court and into the live stage as a musical?
Well, it did.
The newest musical in town, "Rivalry: Ateneo-La Salle The Musical" opened at the Meralco Theater late last month. Set in 1968 (when the schools were still part of the NCAA), the musical is all about the long-standing competition between students and alumni of both schools, not just in athletics and academics but in their personal lives as well.
With a cast that includes a mix of over 50 of the country's most experienced and up-and-coming actors, the show delivers showstopping numbers, with lyrics and melody that are catchy, emotive, memorable, even moving. Some of the songs, in fact, would easily fit into today's mainstream radio playlist. (My favorite is the song called "What if" performed by the three main characters).
The story revolves around two families, one whose members are from Ateneo and the other from La Salle. While involving the two schools, the show tackles a universal theme (rivalry) with all its dramatic ramifications, complications and effects on the protagonists.
While the show centers on Ateneo and La Salle, individuals who didn't go to either school shouldn't be discouraged to see it. After all, the show touches on other themes such as college life in general, sports, family conflict and, of course, love. (Spoiler alert: Yes, UP gets a shout out in the middle of the show. Yey!)
Costume designer Albert Figueras revealed that he had to do a lot of research (including taking a look at very old photo albums and yearbooks) to make sure the cast members' outfits really do match the ear where the show was set.
Most memorable scenes: Every time they're in the locker room. You'd have to watch the show to know why. *Wink*
The highly-anticipated, original Filipino musical is produced by the 4th Wall Company with Ateneo alumnus Ed Gatchalian as executive producer, composer and arranger. Veteran theater director Jaime del Mundo, who studied at La Salle, did the book and directed the show. Multi-talented actor Joel Trinidad, who also went to the Ateneo like Gatchalian, wrote the lyrics.
"Rivalry" runs from February 5 to 12, and 15 to 19, 2012. The show starts at 8 pm on Wed, Thurs, and Friday. Two shows run on Saturdays (3pm and 8pm); and one on Sundays (3pm). Tickets are available at TicketWorld (ticketworld.com.ph or 891-9999) or at the Meralco Theatre itself just before the show.
