Top selling albums in the US so far (January to June 2011)

In the latest sign that the music industry is in trouble (as if we needed any reminders), only one album since January this year has managed to cross the 2-million mark in sales--that album is "21" by the talented Adele. After "21," only one other album--Lady Gaga's "Born This Way"--has surpassed the 1-million sales mark.

It's disappointing that the sales of the 10 top selling albums of 2011 (that were released since January of this year) totals only 7,054,000 copies. A decade ago that sum would have been sales of a single set.

Of course, huge albums released in 2010 has continued to sell throughout this year--there's Nicki Minaj's "Pink Friday;" Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream;" Taylor Swift's "Speak Now;" Rihanna's "Loud;" Eminem's "Recovery;" and Bruno Mars' "Doo Wops & Hooligans" to name a few.

For the first six months of the year, here are the top selling albums (that were released in 2011) in the USA:

1. Adele's "21" has so far sold  2,200,000 copies. It debuted at #1 and has so far clinched that spot for 10 non-consecutive weeks. Hit song from the album includes "Rolling in the deep."

2. Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" has so far scanned 1,382,000 copies. It debuted at #1 (and stayed there for 2 weeks) with over 1 million copies sold in a week, thanks to the $.99 cents promo over at Amazon.com. Hit songs from the album include "Born this way" and "The edge of glory."

3. Chris Brown's "F.A.M.E." has so far racked up 610,000 copies. It debuted at #1 and stayed there for a week. This is a career turn-around for Brown, who experienced a mild boycott after his misdemeanor case a couple of years ago. Hit song from the album include "Look at me now" feat Busta Rhymes and Lil Wayne.

4. Britney Spears' "Femme Fatale" has so far fetched 550,000 copies. It debuted at #1 and stayed there for a week. While it has yet to sell a million copies, RIAA has already certified it Platinum. Hit songs from the album include "Hold it against me" and "Till the world ends."

5. Various Artist contributed to the success of "Songs for Japan" which has so far sold 500,000 copies. It has peaked at #5 in the USA. The 2-disc set was composed by over 30 previously released songs. Proceeds went to the relief operations of the earthquake-stricken Japan.

6. Wiz Khalifa's "Rolling Papers" has so far sold 445,000 copies. It debuted and peaked at #2. This is by far the highest selling album with a Parental Advisory sticker. Hit song includes "Black and yellow."
