Maroon 5 shows lighter side in a press conference for Manila show

Members of the Maroon 5 said to expect "the greatest show on Earth" a few hours before their actual concert at the SMX Convention Center last May 23. But don't get the boys wrong, they didn't hold a press conference to brag, they were just joking around with us.

The press con was short and sweet, lasting for only about 10 minutes, with the boys answering only seven questions from the 200-plus media peeps who showed up (from TV, radio, newspapers, magazines, blogs).

"There is no formula to writing songs," front man Adam Levine said during the press conference at the Shangri-La Plaza in Ortigas (where the group stayed at during their stint here), hours before the actual concert that night. "It's pretty random [writing a song]. It could come from a riff, a line from anyone. It's spontaneous and it's better that way."

Speak of spontaneity, there were some light notes during the event, especially when the boys joked around with each other. Props to host Iya Villarama for keeping it fun during the event as she helped the boys pick questions from a box where media people had earlier dropped pieces of paper with questions written on them.

Asked who is the clown among the group, the boys answered all at the same time--but they each gave out a different name (which was real funny because they did it the second time around with the same results!).

"I hate to be democratic but everyone has his own moment [of being funny], said keyboardist Jesse Carmichael.

Aside from lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Levine and Carmichael, rounding out the band's members are bass guitarist Mickey Madden, guitarist James Valentine, and drummer Matt Flynn (who was celebrating his birthday that day, how cute!).

One of the questions the boys picked to answer was who they'd like to collaborate with in the future. Each member gave out names (of artists/producers that are totally unfamiliar to me). But one artist I did recognize that the boys seem to collectively would love to work with is no other than Adele, whose hit "Rolling in the deep" and accompanying album "21" is burning up the charts the world over.

Since debuting in 2002, Maroon 5 has sold over 10 million albums in the United States and nearly 15 million worldwide, according to the press release handed to us by MCA Music, the band's local record label. Maroon 5 is responsible for hits like "This love," "She will be loved," "Makes me wonder," and "Misery."

The group just released its third single "Out of goodbyes" with Lady Antebellum from their third studio album "Hands all over," the album that their international tour is supporting.

I missed seeing the band when they first held a show at the Araneta Coliseum in 2008 so I feel lucky to have seen them up close this time around (front seat, baby!) even though I didn't get to watch the show.

Too bad I wouldn't be able to say from first hand experience if their concert was indeed the greatest show on earth *wink*. But whether or not it is, one thing's for sure, Maroon 5 is a domineering force of nature in the music industry and we should be honored that they keep coming back here to play music for their most loyal Filipino fans.

* Check back later for videos of the press conference that I took, including one where I catch Adam Levine trying to sneak out of the room quietly. By that time, many media peeps have already gone home. Fortunately I waited a bit and caught him on camera. Yey! :)
